Window Guards
Window guards are designed to prevent fall rather than constitute an intrusion prevention tool. Typically, we talk about window guards as a category of fall prevention devices fixed on a window frame or detachable, they are often mandatory, and always a good idea, in houses, apartments and day care centers.
If you have children, window guards are not only advisable; law often mandates them. Every year, children die or are seriously injured following a fall from a window, even a ground floor window. In order to avoid the repetition of these tragedies, make sure all the rooms the children can access are equipped with standard compliant window bars.
For your safety and the safety of your children, always check that:
- Your window bars are approved by the health department.
- Your window bars are screwed or affixed tightly to their window frame.
- Your window guards are made of a durable steel.
- Your window guards don’t offer more than 4 inches of space between bars, to prevent children from crawling through.
- Your window bars are equipped with a emergency release mechanism if you live below the seventh floor of your building.
Don’t forget that in many states and localities, the law mandates window guards, if children are living in your apartment.
